Machining
E. R. Smith's manufacturing department has been continually updated to incorporate the latest innovations in manufacturing technology today.

Currently, E. R. Smith operates seven large CNC machine centers. All have state-of-the-art controls and are interfaced with the latest version of Master Cam.

Kuraki Boring Mill

E. R. Smith has recently purchased a sizable CNC boring mill. Our Kuraki boring mill boasts a 5" diameter spindle and has the capability to move X=118.0/Y=59/Z=59/W=24 and incorporates an infinitely variable rotary table and 40 position tool changer.

This capacity has become an important part of ERSA' s arsenal. This capability has not only allowed us to machine new equipment frames and parts, but has allowed us to qualify existing frame location and bore size.

(Side note: This machine was responsible for moving the frame bores when we changed the cut-off size on an MI000 to 25.125". It is also instrumental when we change the MI000A vibrator chain drive to a worm and wheel gear drive.)

Hitachi Seiki 40S-4000

Our large Hitachi Seiki turning center has been instrumental in the remanufacturing process. The 40S-4000 is a slant bed lathe with the capability of turning parts up to 18" in diameter by 83" long.

This extremely accurate machine has allowed us to manufacture parts such as: N954/M200 oscillation roller, RBC-21 folding cylinder, N900 cylinder boxes, and folder slitter roll for its remanufacturing program.

(Side Note: The 40S turning center was instrumental in making the oscillation roller when we stretched a Harris N936 (36" wide web width) to an N954 (54" wide web.)

Hitachi Seiki 25S

The 25S is a smaller version of the 40S. The 25S is able to swing a 10" diameter by 24" long piece of stock. The 25S boasts a 10-tool turret, which allows us to efficiently make gear blanks, MI000 vibrator gudgeons, and smaller size cylinder boxes.

(Side Note: All of ERSA remanufactured Ml000 units have new vibrator gudgeons and gears.)

Yang Vertical Machine Center

E.R. Smith operates two identical Yang vertical machining centers. Both boast a large 29.5"X29.5"X51" table capacity and 40-position tool changers. These machines have been retrofitted with Reinshaw inspection probes and Haas rotary tables.

The Reinshaw probe is an influential tool to ERSA's remanufacturing program. By adding the probe to the machine, we have taken an ordinary CNC machine and made it into a large computer-measuring machine (CMM). By having this ability, it has allowed ERSA to accurately measure parts to help us in the reverse engineering process.

Our Yang vertical machine centers have been responsible for manufacturing such items as V25 cylinders, Harris 2FF cams, folding rollers, and plate and blanket reel rods. (See picture of Haas indexing head in operation.)

Hitachi-Seiki VM-40

In addition to the two Yang vertical machining centers, ERSA operates a pair on Hitachi Seiki VM-40's. The VM-40 is a small vertical machine with a 16"x 22" work table and has a 20-position tool changer.

The VM-40 has produced many of the parts for our M200/M110/M122 quick lockup.

In addition to our CNC machining capabilities, ERSA operates a service manual machining department. We have manual lathes, millers, and grinding capabilities at our disposal. Please see our facilities list for ERSA full machine shop capabilities.
